Happy World Oceans Day!

Happy
World Ocean’s Day!

On World Ocean’s Day people around the planet celebrate and honor the body of water which links us all, for what it provides humans and what it represents.

World Ocean’s Day is an opportunity every year to honor the world’s ocean, celebrate the products the ocean provides such as seafood as well as marine life itself for aquariums, pets, and also a time to appreciate its own intrinsic value. This year, we encourage you to reach out to young people in your community and help inspire them for the 2012 theme Youth: the Next Wave for Change

It’s up to each one of us to help ensure that our ocean is protected and conserved for future generations. World Ocean’s Day allows us to:

  • Change perspective – encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them and what it has to offer all of us with hopes of conserving it for present and the future generations.
  • Learn – discover the wealth of diverse and beautiful ocean creatures and habitats, how our daily actions affect them, and how we are all interconnected.
  • Change our ways – we are all linked to, and through, the ocean! By taking care of your backyard, you are acting as a caretaker of our ocean. Making small modifications to your everyday habits will greatly benefit our blue planet.

Happy World Environment Day Everyone!

Image

World Environment Day is the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. World Environment Day activities take place all year round but climax on June 5. It has grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the United Nations (UN) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment as well as encourages political attention and action.

Through World Environment Day, the UN Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable development; to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is Green Economy: Does it include you?

In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbonresource efficient and far more sustainable way of doing business. Everyone counts in this initiative and World Environment Day calls for action – organize a neighborhood clean-up, stop using plastic bags and get your community/coworkers to do the same, plant a tree, print less, walk to work, start a recycling drive…the possibilities are endless!

Are you included in the green economy?

ATL donates commercial grade oven to Spalding High School

Culinary students at Spaldings High in Clarendon have pledged to bake a cake for ATL Chairman Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart after he donated a J$250,000-Vulcan six-burner commercial grade oven to their department this week.

Principal of Spaldings High George Henry along with Richard Azan Member of Parliament for North West Clarendon (MP) and Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport, Works & Housing, were on hand at the 39-year-old institution as Assistant Deputy Chairman of Appliance Traders Limited Ian Neita delivered the unit to the school.

Operating at over eight times the speed than a domestic unit, the stainless steel commercial oven is a premium addition to the school’s culinary department, “This is a push in the right direction for our students and will be immensely useful to our food and nutrition programme. We are deeply grateful for ATL’s donation and we’ll have to show Mr. Stewart how well the oven works by sending him some baked goodies,” said Joan Thompson, head of the home economics department.

Speaking on behalf of ATL’s Chairman Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, Neita said that Stewart insisted that the school receive the unit, stressing that he was only too happy to support an educational endeavor. “Mr. Stewart and ATL were pleased to make this donation to Spaldings High and having prominent ties in the hospitality arena he understands the importance of the culinary arts and extends his encouragement to local budding talent,” Neita said.

MP Richard Azan echoed Stewart’s sentiments stressing the importance of education, “Spaldings High is brimming with potential, but to ensure that our children succeed we must first make sure they have the tools they need. I have a lot of confidence in this school and with this new range oven, I’m expecting Jamaica’s next culinary genius to be spawned right here in this kitchen” he said.

ATL Unbeatable Netball team train with Sunshine Girls

Image

Getting a jumpstart on their upcoming season, Appliance Traders Limited (ATL) netballers took to the court to run drills with Head Coach of Jamaica’s Sunshine Girls, Oberon Pitterson and ace national player Kasey Evering.

In true ‘Sunshine Girl’ style, Pitterson and Evering conducted an intense and exclusive session with the combined senior and junior ATL squad as the team begins preparation for the impending Business House Netball Association (BHNA) in May.

Head of the ATL’s Netball Team Rosemarie Jadusingh said her squad is intent reclaiming the BHNA title after taking top honours in 2009 and placing third in 2011, “We intend to be a dominant force in the inter-company league this season so we’ve begun our preparations earlier. What better way to whip our girls into the competitive and winner mindset than to train with the Sunshine Girls!”
